Prague’s Old Town district, Prague 1, initiated a ban on all motorised vehicles starting on 24 July 2024. Only traffic attendants are exempt from the ban, which is in effect between 22:00 and 06:00. The aim is to improve the overall quality of life for the residents, particularly by providing better conditions for sleep. Traffic signs have been installed to announce the new regulations.
The Prague 1 district had previously attempted this plan in November 2023. At that time, the city administration did not agree with the move, as they believed it had not been sufficiently discussed with the relevant stakeholders. The traffic signs that had been put in place were removed by order of the Mayor of Prague, who argued that the needs of Old Town residents should be balanced with the needs of the overall city. Eight months later, the city district is making a second attempt after several consultations with the city’s transportation department, the mayor’s office, and the surrounding districts. Although the city's position remains unchanged, the Prague 1 district has reapplied the scheme as drafted in November 2023 following these consultations.
