Ljubljana train station transformation underway to strengthen its role as a key European transport hub

On 19 October 2024, construction began to upgrade the Ljubljana main train station, aligning it with its role as a passenger hub at the crossroads of key European rail corridors. Prime Minister Robert Golob and Infrastructure Minister Alenka Bratušek unveiled a plaque to mark the symbolic beginning of the EUR 244 million investment.

Minister Bratušek stated, ‘In less than two years, a central multimodal hub and a state-of-the-art station will stand here, impressing passengers and significantly improving this hub, which serves the main and regional tracks needed for the operations of some 450 trains daily.’ She emphasised the importance of the Ljubljana train station as a core hub within the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T).

The investment is backed by EUR 180 million from the European Commission’s Recovery and Resilience Facility. It is the largest project funded in Slovenia under this programme, noted Jerneja Jug Jerše, Head of the European Commission’s Representation in Slovenia.
