Heraklion, in Greece (GR), has joined the NetZeroCities Twin Cities programme, partnering with Angers Loire Métropole in France (FR). This collaboration aims to drive smart and sustainable urban development, focusing on green infrastructure, energy efficiency, and eco-friendly mobility.
Heraklion is one of 24 cities selected from 14 European countries to participate in this initiative, which seeks to accelerate progress towards climate neutrality through innovative pilot actions.
The partnership between Heraklion and Angers will emphasise technological innovation and practical eco-solutions. Key areas of focus include upgrading municipal services with smart technologies, prioritising low-emission transport, advancing energy and water systems with renewable resources, and using ‘digital twins’ for real-time infrastructure management. Angers' expertise in smart urban management will help Heraklion fast-track its goals, with the first workshop scheduled for next February to exchange ideas and best practices.
For visitors to Heraklion, these developments mean a smarter, more efficient, and eco-friendly city experience. Improvements in public infrastructure, traffic flow, and public spaces will enhance the overall urban environment, making it easier and more enjoyable to explore. The commitment to climate-neutral strategies and the integration of smart technologies will support sustainable travel and reflect an eco-friendly approach throughout the city.
