Greece brings cycling tourism to the forefront with new inter-ministerial collaboration

Greece’s (GR) Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport has joined forces with the Ministries of Environment and Energy, Tourism, the Central Union of Municipalities (KEDE), and the nonprofit Cities for Cycling to boost cycling tourism. This inter-ministerial agreement strengthens the role of the EuroVelo National Coordination Centre in promoting sustainable travel.

The initiative focuses on enhancing Greece’s three EuroVelo routes and integrating them into the national tourism strategy to drive economic growth and sustainable mobility. With cycling tourism generating billions across Europe, Greece aims to capitalise on its scenic landscapes and cultural heritage by fostering public-private partnerships and investing in cyclist-friendly infrastructure.

Key objectives of the agreement include developing a national cycling policy, expanding EuroVelo routes, and improving bike-friendly infrastructure. By connecting rural and urban areas to international cycling networks, Greece seeks to enrich tourism experiences while supporting local economies.

With ongoing investments in cycling infrastructure, Greece is positioning itself as a top destination for eco-conscious travellers. By embracing sustainable mobility, the country aims to offer unforgettable cycling adventures while promoting economic and environmental benefits.
