€50 million investment to expand Madrid's zero-emission bus fleet

The European Investment Bank (EIB) has provided a €50 million loan to Madrid’s Empresa Municipal de Transportes (EMT) to expand its zero-emission bus fleet. The initiative involves purchasing 250 electric buses and 10 hydrogen buses, along with necessary charging infrastructure, with the aim to replace the city's ageing fleet, enhance sustainable urban transport and reduce the noise and pollution experienced in Madrid.

The project is part of the broader Madrid 360 Sustainable Mobility Plan, supporting the city's strategy to transition to less polluting vehicles and aligning with the EIB’s Transport Lending Policy and EU climate objectives. Currently, Madrid boasts 30 zero-emissions bus lines, the highest number of fully electric routes in Spain, contributing to improved urban mobility and sustainability.

In line with the EIB's goals for sustainable transport, the initiative supports safer, greener and more efficient urban mobility. The EIB, the EU's long-term lending institution, focuses on funding projects that promote innovation, sustainable development and climate neutrality, with substantial investments across Europe to drive these objectives forward.
