On 6 March 2025, the European Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism, Apostolos Tzitzikostas hosted a Youth Policy Dialogue in Brussels with 20 young participants from across the EU to discuss the theme: “Shaping the future: Expectations and needs of young travellers and job seekers”. The discussion highlighted the diverse transport needs of young people, emphasising that there is no one-size-fits-all solution.
Among the key urban mobility topics discussed, participants highlighted the importance of providing low-cost, sustainable transport options in cities. They emphasised the importance of goals such as Vision Zero and zero-emission targets, as well as the need for better infrastructure to support walking, cycling, and public transport.
Another point of discussion was the need for improved interoperability and accessibility within urban transport systems. The group stressed that reliable and well-connected services are essential, along with more inclusive design to ensure transport is accessible to all.
Finally, safety remained a major concern, particularly for women travelling late at night. Several solutions, including female-only carriages or safety buttons on public transport, were suggested as potential measures to improve security for young travellers.
