The city of Algeciras approves its new Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan

The Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP) and the Traffic Improvement Plan of the city of Algeciras were approved last week by the Municipal Council of the city. The documents will come into force once they are published in the Official Gazette of the Province of Cadiz. The SUMP has been developed with the involvement of local political parties, neighbourhood associations, social groups and residents.

The SUMP focuses on five main fields of action: motorised and non-motorised infrastructure, public transport, parking systems and urban planning/traffic management. It aims to improve the quality of life of residents by reducing pollutant emissions and noise levels, thanks to the promotion of the use of non-motorised transport means.

To this end, a hundred actions are planned to be carried out gradually, during the next ten years. Measures include limiting vehicles to a maximum speed of 30 km/h in the city centre, instead of 50 km/h as per normal traffic regulations. Additionally, the plan sets out the intention to install speed humps and specific interventions in neighbourhoods, street resurfacing, actions to support cycling and the promotion of car sharing.

The SUMP is co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) 2014-2020.
