The Brussels Region has made the decision to ban mopeds from its Low Emission Zone (that covers the entire area) that do not meet Euro 5 standards. The ban is scheduled to start on 1 January 2025.
Cabinet figures from Environment Minister Alan Maron state that these mopeds are specifically polluting. They emit 11 times more CO2 per fuel unit compared to a diesel vehicle and their loud engines also add to urban noise pollution.
Since low-budget electric mopeds offer a net zero-emission alternative to conventional vehicles of Euro 4 or lower, these mopeds are being phased out earlier than some motorcycles. Environment Minister Maron says that motorcycles are given a longer phasing out time, since environmentally friendly alternatives are not yet available at a comparable scale like mopeds.
