Bike and car-sharing facilities in Trieste to improve urban mobility

The Municipality of Trieste (Italy) recently launched an information campaign targeted at residents and stakeholders on innovative and sustainable mobility.  The campaign is part of the framework of the European project, CIVITAS PORTIS. Until the end of August 2020 thematic events, seminars, conferences and round tables will be organised to provide updates on the progress of the project and collect ideas and useful suggestions from residents.

The first event took place on 26 June in Trieste, with the conference titled "The integration of Porto Vecchio and the city: current challenges and sustainable development - historical background, current situation, future challenges", arranged in collaboration with professional associations of architects, engineers, surveyors and industrial experts.

The European project CIVITAS PORTIS, funded under the Horizon 2020 Programme, aims to test innovative solutions of sustainable urban mobility in order to increase functional and social cohesion between urban centers and ports, pushing economic growth and improving the attractiveness of urban environments. The project involves five European port cities: Trieste, Antwerp(Belgium), Aberdeen (United Kingdom), Constanta(Romania), Klaipeda(Lithuania).  The Municipality of Trieste is supported by additional stakeholders such as the Port Authority of the Eastern Adriatic Sea, the Area Science Park, the University of Trieste and Trieste Trasporti.

The project in Trieste aims to improve overall accessibility through different actions:

• the preparation of a Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP);
• strengthening of the system for the collection and analysis of traffic data;
• development of apps and computer systems that provide useful and updated information to those who travel in the city, and;
• an increase of cycling routes and pedestrian areas.
