Barcelona metropolitan area gets public bike service

The Metropolitan Area of Barcelona (AMB) is set to introduce a public bicycle service, after the Council approved the decision on 27 July 2021. AMB will own the service, and TMB (the areas public transport operator) will run it. The public bicycle service will be intregrated as part of public transport services, and comes with the aim to extend the coverage of public transport networks and strengthen people’s options for intermodal trips by bike and public transport.

The public bicycle service has been developed partly from good experiences from the e-Bicibox service, which promotes electric bicycle use and the wider acceptance of sustainable modes of mobility. The e-bikes are located at specific public transport stations as the new larger bicycle service will be too.

Vice President of Mobility, Transport and Sustainability of the AMB, Antoni Poveda states: "The experience that e-Bicibox has brought us over the last two years at the AMB has allowed us to go one step further and evolve, propose and create a new, wider, more powerful and ambitious metropolitan public bicycle service”.

AMB aims to start operating between September - December 2022, with 2,000 bicycles and 200 stations forming the first implementation stage of new service. They will be distributed in 15 municipalities in the metropolis: L'Hospitalet de Llobregat, Badalona, ​​Cornellà de Llobregat, Santa Coloma de Gramenet, El Prat de Llobregat, Esplugues de Llobregat, Sant Feliu de Llobregat, Sant Adrià de Besòs, Sant Joan Despí, Sant Just Desvern, Molins de Rei, Sant Boi de Llobregat, Viladecans, Gavà and Castelldefels.
