Transport at COP28

In the three decades since the Rio Summit and the launch of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the Conference of the Parties to the Convention (COP) has convened member countries annually to determine, identify and assess climate measures.

The 21st session of the COP (COP21) led to the Paris Agreement, which mobilised countries into collective action to limit global temperature increasing beyond 1.5C above pre-industrial levels by 2100, and act to adapt to the already existing effects of climate change.

COP28 will take place in Dubai, UAE, from the 30 November to 12 December 2023.

On 6 December, with the focus on 'Multilevel action, urbanisation and the built environment, and transport', COP28 will feature a historic presence of local leaders, including mayors, governors, parliamentarians, business and civil society leaders, united to accelerate climate action across all levels of government and society.

This day will bring together policy makers and experts from the transport industry and civil society, with panels discussing the role and contribution of transport in fighting climate change at global level.

It will also highlight solutions to transition to low carbon and resilient built environments and infrastructure, sustainable and circular waste systems, and sustainable mobility and freight. The day will particularly look at action in urban areas, where population growth, economic activity and greenhouse gas emissions converge.
