COP29 – 2024 United Nations Climate Change Conference

The 29th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29), will take place in Baku, Azerbaijan, from 11 November to 22 November 2024. This major international event will bring together world leaders, business representatives and climate experts to advance efforts in addressing climate change. Key areas of focus include achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, limiting global temperature rise to 1.5°C, and securing stronger climate finance. Additionally, the conference will emphasize the development of more ambitious Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) to ensure countries’ climate plans align with the Paris Agreement’s long-term goals.

COP29 will include a range of sessions targeting sustainable urban mobility, underscoring its role in reducing emissions and increasing climate resilience within cities. Some urban mobility-related sessions include:

  • Urbanisation, Transport, and Tourism Day: Scheduled for November 20, this thematic day will bring together key discussions on the challenges of decarbonising urban environments. A high-level meeting on urbanisation will discuss sustainable approaches for cities, alongside roundtables on sustainable transport, resilient infrastructure, and financing climate action in urban spaces.
  • Urban Mobility Highlights at the Denmark Pavilion: Hosted at the Denmark Pavilion in Baku, this event will showcase Danish companies and their innovative approaches to sustainable urban mobility. The sessions will include expert-led presentations on mobility technologies and urban resilience, with a particular focus on climate adaptation strategies for cities worldwide.
  • Managing Competing Sectoral Demands for Renewable Energy in Sustainable Transport: This virtual session, held on 15 November, will be accessible through the OECD Pavilion. It will address the challenge of balancing renewable energy needs across sectors, focusing on how the energy transition can prioritise sustainable transport in urban areas while supporting other critical sectors.
  • Transforming Urban Mobility: Leveraging NDCs for Sustainable Transport and Climate Action: Taking place in Baku on 19 November, this in-person session will be co-hosted by UITP, FIA Foundation, WALK21, PATH, and the European Cyclists’ Federation (ECF). The discussion will centre on embedding urban transport goals within Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and encouraging cities to adopt zero-emission transport.
  • Effective Transport Strategies for Boosting Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs): Also held in Baku on 19 November, this session, organised by UNESCAP, ITF, and SLOCAT, will focus on actionable strategies to align urban mobility goals with NDCs, driving sustainable, low-emission transport solutions in cities worldwide.
  • GHG Emission Accounting and Reporting for Transport: Held virtually via the OECD Pavilion, this session will cover methods for tracking greenhouse gas emissions in urban and intercity transport.
