The Federal Ministry of Climate Action, Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation and Technology is the responsible national authority for the SUMP-Supporting Programme (NSSP) for Austrian cities. NSSPs are currently under development in Austria. In the national framework of the "Initiative for climate neutral cities", support and federal funding for cities are offered for partner cities.
Austrian cities have highly developed and differentiated transportation and urban planning in force including certain elements and/or variations of the SUMP approach. Austria has a highly advanced system of public transport in its major cities and they are advanced in implementing mobility management measures in urban areas. The national Austrian Mobility Masterplan 2030 is the base for all strategies on national, regional and local level and was updated in 2022 by the Federal Ministry of Climate Action.
The nine urban nodes on NUTS2-level are the capitals of the nine federal provinces of Austria. The city of Vienna, up to now the only Austrian city having an SUMP, is currently updating it. [https://sump-central.eu/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/SUMP-Vienna.pdf]
The other eight cities are elaborating their SUMP in different working stages finishing 2027. e.g. SUMP Graz.
Based on the Austrian national 2030 Masterplan Mobility, various national strategies are developed and put into action, e.g. the 2030 Masterplan Walking or the updated Masterplan Cycling.
Based on these national strategies, various regional and local strategies are developed and put into action including the following:
- the Walking Strategy of the province of Styria
- the local Walking Masterplan of Graz (capital of Styria).
- the Masterplan Walking of the province of Salzburg
Thus, national strategies can boost and stimulate regional and local strategies. All of these strategies then feed into the SUMPs of the urban nodes.
On a national level, the climate protection programme, ‘klimaaktiv mobil’, offers cities and municipalities (as well as several other target groups) consultation and financial support for the implementation of mobility management measures. These measures are part of SUMPs and profit urban mobility.
