Updated Decarbonisation of Urban Mobility SUMP with expert recommendations now available!

The Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP) reference materials, available in the Expert Corner of the EU Urban Mobility Observatory, provide detailed planning recommendations on a wide range of topics, grouped under various thematic areas. These resources are valuable tools for urban mobility planners, policymakers, and other stakeholders involved in developing sustainable transport systems. Prepared by experts from the SUMP community, the reference materials are designed to help cities address key mobility challenges and achieve long-term climate and environmental goals.

One of the key documents within this collection, the Decarbonisation of Urban Mobility guide, has recently been revised and is now available for download. This revision is part of wider streamlining activities and aims to provide updated guidance for cities seeking to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from transport and align with European Union climate neutrality targets.

The Decarbonisation of Urban Mobility guide focuses on integrating decarbonisation strategies into SUMPs. It offers practical advice for urban and regional planners, public transport authorities, and stakeholders such as real estate developers and civil society groups. The guide is particularly relevant for those aiming to implement low-carbon mobility solutions, such as promoting walking, cycling, public transport, and adopting electric vehicles.

This revised edition emphasises the "avoid-shift-improve" framework, helping cities identify and implement effective measures to reduce emissions. The guide also includes methodologies for calculating and monitoring emissions, ensuring alignment with the European Green Deal and "Fit for 55" climate goals. Furthermore, it highlights the importance of institutional cooperation and stakeholder involvement to ensure the successful long-term decarbonisation of urban transport systems.

For those involved in urban mobility planning, the guide offers essential strategies for achieving climate mitigation targets and is available for download alongside other SUMP reference materials, here.
