Sofia has rolled out a series of improvements to its public transport tram services

Since the start of May, the Bulgarian capital has rolled out a series of improvements to its public transport tram services, by both installing a new line and upgrading others in terms of improving rolling stock, frequency, service time and connections to train services.

Among the series of improvements, the introduction of Sofia's new tram line No.15 stands out. The No.15 tram line now connects the districts “Buxton” and “Hladilnika” and re-establishes a former direct connection between the two districts. The new tram is synchronised with the existing lines No.4 and No.5 and provides service intervals of less than 3 minutes along major public transport routes such as the Tsar Boris III Boulevard.

The city has also improved other existing tram lines:

  • The rolling stock of tram line No.6 has been upgraded to air-conditioned vehicles meeting the needs of people with reduced mobility. The tram stops have been additionally adjusted to provide access to the tram without any barriers.
  • The tram line No.8 has seen improvements in it frequency of service, as well as having extended service times to later hours of the day.
  • Tram lines No.3 and 27 have also been extended to stop at the Sofia Sever station, safeguarding seamless connections between train and tram services.

Deputy Mayor Eng. Iliyan Pavlov stated that large and northern neighbourhoods, which had been underserved so far, benefit the most from these improvements. He also assured Sofia’s residents that efforts will continue to further improve the transportation network of the Bulgarian capital in the future.
