Urban road safety to be recognised at Excellence in Road Safety Awards 2024

The Excellence in Road Safety Awards 2024 are to take place on 14 November 2024. The registration to attend these awards is now officially open!

This year, one out of the five award categories is dedicated to urban road safety. The Urban Road Safety Award, open to city and regional authorities, celebrates initiatives that go above and beyond to protect road users in densely populated towns and cities.

Urban road safety is crucial due to the high concentration of traffic and the diverse mix of pedestrians, cyclists, and vehicles sharing the same space. Effective urban road safety initiatives can significantly reduce accidents, save lives, and improve the quality of life for residents. They ensure that cities are safer and more livable, contributing to more sustainable and enjoyable urban environments.

The awards panel is currently reviewing all the outstanding submissions received this year. The categories for the 2024 awards are:

  • Best project supporting road safety for vulnerable road users: pedestrians and cyclists
  • Best project supporting road safety in motorcycling
  • Best use of technology and innovation to promote road safety
  • Urban Road Safety Award (open to municipal, city and regional authorities)
  • Best project promoting road safety education

The winners will be announced at the awards ceremony taking place in Brussels and online on 14 November.

The European Road Safety Charter, initiated in 2004 by the European Commission, is the largest civil society platform on road safety. It is comprised of more than 4,000 public and private entities that have committed to taking measurable action to improving road safety in their communities. The Excellence in Road Safety Awards were introduced in 2006 as a way to recognise and platform commendable initiatives implemented across the region.

In 2023, nearly 80 road safety initiatives were nominated. The winning initiatives stood out as delivering specific and measurable safety actions to benefit their communities. The winners were the following:

  • Zavarovalnica Triglav and AMZS (Slovenia) – Refreshing rides for seniors with instructor
  • VZW Symfoon (Belgium) – Obstacle-free pavements with Team Trottoir
  • Austrian Institute of Technology (AIT) (Austria) - Mobility Observation Box (MOB)
  • An Post (Ireland) – Driving towards Zero campaign
