Close to the train station in Rovereto, Italy, new 'bike boxes' have been installed for commuters and cyclists, offering parking at a rate of 10 cents per hour. The bike boxes have already been installed on Via Zeni, with the service available from mid-May. The municipality plans to assess the need for additional bike boxes in the city based on the success of this initial trial.
To use the Rovereto bike boxes, users will have to register via a web app to unlock the entrance. A 36-hour parking limit is enforced, with the door automatically opening upon expiration. Each module consists of three compartments, with space for up to two bicycles, be it traditional or electric. The parking spaces target not only regular cyclists but also those with pedal-assisted bikes seeking a bike-charging spot.
The price of use is so low thanks to funds from car street parking being allocated to support the construction and maintenance of the bike boxes.
Similar initiatives are emerging worldwide, such as Oonee startup's parking spaces in New York and Belgium's efforts to provide secure bicycle facilities while revitalising historic buildings.
