Malta Public Transport is embarking on a EUR 20 million initiative to electrify the nation's public transportation network. Central to this endeavour is the inauguration of a state-of-the-art electric bus charging facility and the introduction of 30 fully electric, emissions-free buses. This transition to electric buses promises a substantial positive impact, marked by a significant reduction in emissions, notably a 70% cut in greenhouse gases, and a marked decrease in noise pollution. Furthermore, these modern electric buses are outfitted with various passenger enhancements, including accessibility features, air conditioning, USB chargers, and complimentary Wi-Fi, ultimately elevating the overall passenger experience.
These electric buses feature cutting-edge battery technology, providing an impressive range of up to 300 kilometres on a single charge. The majority of these buses can be conveniently charged overnight, ensuring seamless service from dawn to dusk. Additionally, there's an option for swift charging at the electric bus charging depot during the daytime. This transition to electric buses is projected to lead to a substantial reduction of approximately 1,800 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year compared to traditional diesel buses, thus making a significant contribution to environmental sustainability.
In addition to these initiatives, Malta Public Transport is also embarking on a pilot program featuring an electric minibus, designed to assess its performance on routes with lower demand and within village cores. This compact alternative aligns with the overarching goal of fostering a greener and more sustainable transportation future for Malta.
The investment is set to usher in an increase in service frequencies on vital routes, ultimately translating into reduced waiting times for passengers and greater available space on buses. This investment aligns seamlessly with Malta Public Transport's mission to reduce traffic congestion and curb pollution by advocating for sustainable transportation solutions. This robust transition towards electrification and sustainable practices underscores a resolute commitment to delivering a more eco-friendly and efficient public transportation system for the community.
