Madeira and Porto Santo launch integrated ticketing system for bus services

The Portuguese islands of Madeira and Porto Santo have launched a new integrated ticketing system for bus services, named Siga. This initiative, developed in collaboration with the urban mobility firm Flowbird and their local partner Neves & Neves, unifies three bus operators under one network. Passengers can now use the Giro smartcard, paper tickets, or a mobile app to access multiple transport services, enhancing the ease of travel across the islands.

Flowbird has provided the necessary infrastructure, including over 500 bus driver consoles, on-bus validators, and self-service ticket vending machines to support the Giro smartcard's purchase and top-up. This system aims to simplify public transport access for both residents and tourists, streamlining millions of journeys annually by offering a centralised ticketing and retail function for bus operators. The next phase of the project will include real-time vehicle location and arrival time displays both in vehicles and at stops, further improving the user experience.

This partnership showcases a successful collaboration between Flowbird and Neves & Neves, which has been ongoing since 1989. The unified bus network, Siga, will be operated by Companhia de Autocarros da Madeira, Siga Rodoeste, and Horários do Funchal, making public transportation more efficient and accessible across Madeira and Porto Santo.
