On 29 January 2018, the Department of Home Affairs and Sports and the State Traffic Authority will present a solution for smart park management in the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg together with representatives of Deutsche Telekom.
The Deutsche Telekom app "Park and Joy" uses information from sensors on Hamburg’s parking lots to allow road users in Hamburg to quickly and easily find a parking space. After parking, the ticket is paid for via the mobile application, simplifying the whole process from start to finish. The sensors use new radio technology (NB-IoT) to provide information about available floor space. The first hundred sensors are being installed in the Wandsbek Markt area of the city, with up to 11,000 sensors expected across Hamburg's entire inner-city by the end of 2019.
Speaking about the project, Oliver Bahns, head of Connected Mobility at T-Systems, said:
“Residents and the city administration benefit from digital services such as our parking app. We spend an average 20 minutes looking for a parking space. This clogs up roads and increases exhaust emissions in the city centre. Here we aim to provide a solution with Park and Joy. We are delighted to use in Hamburg our new parking sensor network extensively for the first time.”
Parking space availability forecasts will greatly facilitate mobility for workers, citizens and tourists in Hamburg. The planned link between park & ride and public transport - by bus, train or even bicycles - facilitates the development of new digital transport models in Germany. Above all, predictable use of the transport infrastructure is a big plus for all road users, while the city receives an effective management tool.
