At the end of June 2023, the company in charge of the Lisbon public transit system, Metropolitano de Lisboa, announced a plan to install four new elevators and renovate the current 12 escalators in the Campo Grande station by December 2023.
The project, with an investment of EUR 22.9 million, began on 26 June and aims to increase the accessibility of the high-traffic station, located in Lisbon's city centre. The project, Metropolitano says, is part of the 'National Plan for the Promotion of Accessibility'. The plan, (or Estratégia Nacional de Promoção da Acessibilidade, in Portuguese) was published in the Official Gazette in December 2021, and intends to achieve 'Accessibility and Mobility For All'.
Once installed, the four planned elevators will assist Metropolitano travellers with limited mobility, most notably wheelchair users and those with other mobility aids, and grant ease of access from the ground level to the platform. The renovation of the escalators will occur in a gradual process, to avoid ‘causing constraints’ to users, keeping the existing escalators going upwards, while the stairs function for the descent, temporarily.
Metropolitano de Lisboa also said in a press release that 52 of the 56 stations in Lisbon will be fully accessible by 2025, excluding the new stations it plans to expand to, which will open with all the mentioned accessible facilities. They also emphasised that 77% of stations in the Lisbon network had full accessibility, equipped with elevators, mechanical stairs, and moving walkways. Overall, the company has already paid approximately EUR 5.12 million to replace parts in a number of stations to improve accessibility and update mechanical equipment.
