Croatia launches funding initiative for electric bus charging infrastructure

On 31 December 2024, the Croatian Ministry of Economy launched a call for funding to support the construction of electric bus charging infrastructure under Investment C7.1 R1-I4. This initiative aims to enhance alternative fuel infrastructure in public transport, strengthening sustainable mobility and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The Croatian Ministry of Sea, Transport and Infrastructure is also allocating funds for procuring electric buses. Applications for the infrastructure call will be accepted from 3 March 2025 to 31 August 2025.

The objective of the call is to build at least 150 charging points for electric buses to accelerate the decarbonisation of the transport sector. These charging points will not be publicly available and will be used exclusively for charging the vehicles of beneficiaries, with the infrastructure located on private property. All projects must include a feasibility study with a cost-benefit analysis and a climate risk and vulnerability assessment. The deadline for installation is 30 June 2026.

The total grant amount is EUR 50 million, with eligible applicants including small, medium, and large firms, as well as companies founded by public institutions. Eighteen organisations have already expressed interest in securing a total of EUR 46 million for 242 charging points. Expected investments in electric vehicle chargers in Croatia are expected to total EUR 200 million until 2030, driven by the Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation (AFIR).
