Vilnius debuts dedicated cycling street, prioritising bicycles over cars

Vilnius has launched its first dedicated cycling street on P. Vileišio Street in the Antakalnis District, designed to prioritise bicycles over cars, while still accommodating both.

The street features signage indicating equal importance for bicycles and cars, with two lanes for each direction and a central cobblestone lane to encourage cars to adhere to the 30 km/h speed limit. This setup allows cyclists to ride side by side, and cars are prohibited from overtaking or parking outside designated spots.

The decision to transform P. Vileišio Street stemmed from recognising the critical importance of this route for cyclists, and addressing the previous infrastructure's inadequacies. Cyclists now enjoy greater freedom on this road, unlike motorcyclists who must still ride near the right-hand edge.

JUDU, the Vilnius Department of Transportation, views this initiative as a significant step towards developing a comprehensive cycling network in the city and across Lithuania, especially in areas where creating separate cycling lanes is not feasible.
