Valencia's eco-friendly delivery pilot will reduce CO2 emissions and fossil fuel trips in 'Last Mile Logistics'

Valencia City Council has initiated a 'Last Mile' delivery pilot project in collaboration with the Municipal Transport Company (EMT) and local courier firm Encicle.

The programme involves providing designated parking space on the first floor of the car park in the Plaza Ciudad de Brujas for Encicle's eco-friendly delivery vans, leading to an estimated avoidance of 500 daily fossil fuel-powered vehicle journeys. The EMT offers a 37% parking access discount and a consistent space, promoting sustainable logistics and reducing CO2 emissions by approximately 9 tonnes per year.

Encicle's electric vans will deposit deliveries in the designated space from 04:00 to 09:00, serving as a logistical distribution point. Electric bicycles and cargo bikes will then collect and deliver goods across the city, ensuring zero emission travel and contributing to the European Green Capital initiative. The initiative shows the city’s commitment to sustainable practices and positive environmental impact.

In addition to the Last Mile Delivery project, EMT Valencia is actively working to enhance its overall sustainable transport fleet. The company has launched a tender for the purchase of new 26 electric and 31 hybrid buses by the end of 2024. This initiative aims to reduce polluting emissions and decrease the average age of the fleet, making 68% of the buses electric or hybrid and contributing to a substantial reduction in the average age of the entire fleet.
