In order to address the increasing cost of living, residents and visitors in the Valencia Region in Spain will now be able to take public transport for free on Sundays. This measure - introduced by the Valencian Regional Government – will be active for three months, from 1 May until 31 July in the main cities of Valencia, Alicante and Castellon.
Other than supporting people who are struggling in the face of the increasing cost of living and inflation, the initiative aims to promote and encourage the use of public transport. The public transport networks that will be available for free are the Metrovalencia, Alicante’s tramway and the tramway in Castelló. The Valencian Regional Government also decided to provide discounted tickets for other regional transport systems.
The measure is part of a plan from the Regional Government that aims to mitigate the rising energy prices that are directly affecting residents’ lives. Around 113,500 people will benefit from the initiative, of which around 110,000 use the Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat Valenciana (FGV), the regional train company that manages the Metrovalencia and the tramway in Alicante, and another 3,500 who travel on the tramway in Castelló on Sundays.
Both the FGV and the Valencia Metropolitan Transport Authority (ATMV) had already reduced ticket prices by up to 50% in March 2022 as a result of an integrated ticketing initiative. Starting in the summer, another 50% reduction will be applied to all tickets of the Alicante tramway, following the simplification of the zone system.
So, users travelling on Sundays for the next three months in the Valencia Region will be able to pass through the open metro ticketing gates without paying. The ticketing validation systems will be turned off in order to prevent people from paying accidentally.
