SuCoLo is a three-year project running from January 2024 to June 2026 under the DUT initiative, aiming to encourage more sustainable consumer behaviour by introducing inclusive, bicycle-based logistics in suburban areas. Pilots are underway in Salzburg (AT), Leipzig (DE) and Merano (IT), and the project will conclude with a set of practical outputs, including a simulation model, design toolkit, behaviour-change guidebook and policy recommendations to support Sustainable Urban Bicycle Logistics Plans.
One notable development has been the launch of free rental e-scooters for older people and individuals with disabilities in Merano, available via advance booking through a dedicated app. Both Merano and Leipzig feature pilot sites that have been chosen for their links to public transport and local commuter routes. These sites host bicycle logistics facilities such as pick-up stations and a mobile micro-hub that complement wider transport networks and freight consolidation centres in their districts.
To assess inclusiveness and accessibility, SuCoLo has created 3D virtual tours of its pilot areas Merano and Leipzig using the IG-VAE methodology, which combines immersive 360° imaging, georeferenced mapping and universal design principles. These digital tools help stakeholders understand how people with differing mobility needs can access infrastructure around the pilot hubs. The primary findings are available in Deliverable 4.2 (Innovative 3D tours describing the accessibility and inclusion of pilot sites according to the IG-VAE methodology) and Deliverable D4.1 (Georeferenced mapping of POIs regarding accessibility and standardised adaptation plans (PEBA) in case of barriers)
Together, these insights will inform a forthcoming toolkit to guide the development of inclusive, effective bicycle logistics hubs in suburban contexts—advancing SuCoLo’s broader goal of equitable, low-carbon last-mile delivery solutions.
