Veneto has become a leading region for cycling mobility in Italy, integrating cycling with rail travel by offering a quarter of all bicycle spaces on Trenitalia rail carriages. This commitment is also evident through a robust network of cycle lanes and dedicated infrastructures.
The introduction of the "Tutto Bici" supplement for train travellers has significantly boosted this trend, with a 45% increase in sales within a year. The "Tutto Bici" service caters to the Bologna-Verona-Trento-Bolzano-Brennero line, which passes through scenic and cyclist-friendly areas. Veneto alone provides 6,240 bicycle spaces daily, with 896 spaces specifically for the mentioned route. Elisa De Berti, Vice President of the Veneto Region, highlighted that in summer 2023, the service saw up to 9,000 cyclists on weekends, underscoring the region's appeal to cycling tourists.
Despite previous challenges in integrating bicycles with rail travel, such as restrictions during the lockdown and updates to transport rules, Veneto's "Tutto Bici" initiative stands out as a successful model. It complements significant national cycling routes like the Alta Italia and Ciclovia del Sole, positioning the region as a vital hub for cycling tourism in Italy.
