Salzburg kicks off public participation for Mobility Plan 2040

Salzburg has launched the public participation process for its new Mobility Plan 2040, the city’s first binding, long-term transport strategy. The plan will guide mobility development to 2040, balancing public transport, cycling, walking and road use in line with EU Sustainable Urban Mobility Planning guidelines.

The launch took place on 18 September during European Mobility Week, attracting around 200 participants. At interactive stations, experts presented themes such as bus connections, cycling routes, car-sharing and redesigned street spaces. Citizens debated proposals, sketched ideas and shared experiences.

Councillor for Transport Anna Schiester said she was impressed by the quality of the discussions: “Ideas ranged from new cycle routes and better bus links to creating more space in the streets. It’s this combination of everyday knowledge and expert input that will make the Mobility Plan 2040 both practical and ambitious.” She added that the strong public engagement provided “the momentum needed to take bold decisions together”.

Representatives from the Salzburg Transport Association, research institutions, local initiatives and community organisations joined citizens in testing new mobility options, including electric buses and cargo bikes.

The city council is expected to adopt the plan’s targets later this year, with detailed measures to follow in 2026. Participation will continue through neighbourhood forums, workshops and online surveys.
