Rotterdam trials free public transport for children up to 12 years of age

Starting on 1 January 2022, Rotterdam is opening up its public transport network for free to all children up to 12 years of age. This message was published by the city at the start of December 2021, and it will run for a one-year test period. The idea is to make public transport use more attractive and accessible to children and their parents alike.

So far, the free use of public transport was limited to children up to 3 years of age. During 2022, Rotterdam opens its metros, trams and buses for free to children up to the age of 12 years, if accompanied by an adult. The offer is valid for all Rotterdam residents.

This pilot scheme aims to stop parents always driving their children by car. It wants to create a 'socialisation' effect, making public transport use the habitual choice and experience of children. It also aims to extend their accessbility and mobility, helping them discover new places in the city.

From December 2021, the free 2022 personal cards can be claimed by parents.
