Rimini rolls out sustainable last-mile logistics for the hospitality sector

The city of Rimini has launched HORECA LAST MILE, a pioneering project aimed at transforming last-mile logistics for the hospitality sector through smart, sustainable solutions. Developed with local partners, the initiative introduces Italy's first refrigerated micro-hub with multi-operator capability, supported by advanced orchestration software. 

The system combines smart cold lockers, a real-time coordination platform, and zero-emission cargo bikes. This integrated approach ensures cold-chain compliance while streamlining food deliveries and reducing the environmental footprint. The city of Rimini follows Bologna’s URBANE project by becoming a testing ground for smart, sustainable urban logistics.

Focusing on the HORECA sector (i.e. hotels, restaurants and catering), the project aims to enhance the efficiency and reliability of urban food distribution, particularly in high-density, restricted traffic zones in the city centre. It offers a scalable and predictive model that supports the national goals of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan, particularly around ecological and digital innovation.

Economically, the project aims to reduce operational costs and improve service levels by minimising travel time and optimising resources. Environmentally, it lowers air and noise pollution by removing heavy combustion vehicles from city centres, while ensuring consistent food quality through temperature control. 

Socially, the project supports a wider shift towards sustainable mobility and shared environmental responsibility - positioning Rimini and the Emilia-Romagna region at the forefront of innovative urban logistics in Europe.
