In early May the European Committee of the Regions held a high-level event to launch the Smart City Guidance Package, a roadmap for integrated planning and implementation for Smart City projects.
REMOURBAN coordinator Miguel García-Fuentes (CARTIF) presented the project's Urban Regeneration Model along with the synergies with the Smart City Guidance Package as part of a session entitled "Innovative approaches to integrated planning and implementation of smart city solutions – real-life examples from SCC01 lighthouse projects." The recent guidance draws on the experience of many EU-fund projects, past and present, and packages it into a practical toolbox for cities to use in their efforts towards more sustainability.
Miguel explains: "Already in REMOURBAN, we have tried to capture the expert knowledge from practices, methods and technologies to create a set of useful guidelines. Consequently, there is a natural link with the Smart City Guidance Practice to which we have contributed by sharing our approach and by organising joint activities such as the clustering meeting in Nottingham and the replication workshop in Seraing." The launch event provided an overview of the guidance package and highlighted practical cases from the REMOURBAN, REPLICATE and RUGGEDISED projects.
Published by EIP-SCC, the guidance is aligned with UN policy on sustainable development and sets out a 7-step roadmap to support stakeholders in planning and implementing projects, synergies and strategies for the smart city of tomorrow. "I think there is a huge potential for the Smart City Guidance Package to become a benchmarking guide for cities. A key strength of the package is that it is rooted in reality, based on the practical experiences collected from the projects which have actually faced the challenges dealt with in the guidance" concludes Miguel.
