Public bicycle system to connect urban agglomeration of Split

The Croatian city of Split has announced the creation of a city-wide public bike sharing scheme to improve connectivity within the city. “From Trogir to Podstrana, Split to Dicmo” is the guiding idea behind the new public bicycle sharing system that connects eight municipalities of the urban agglomeration.

The scheme will involve the installation of 41 new stations equipped with more than 240 bicycles. It will provide access to areas alongside public transport, and will act as an alternative to individual motorised transport. About half of the new bicycles will be e-bikes and the other half classic bicycles. Around 40% of the terminals and 30% of the bicycles will be located in Spilt itself, so the majority of the terminals and bicycles will be distributed around the 7 neighbouring municipalities of the agglomeration.

The installation of the scheme will be complemented by the construction of two new bicycle roads and the creation of a bicycle track development plan for the entire agglomeration.

The project costs are around €1.8 million and are 80% covered by EU funds. The sharing system is planned to be ready by June 2021, in time for the start of the tourist season.
