In a move to foster more sustainable and liveable urban environments, a new initiative, Better Cities Fund, has been introduced in Prague with the backing of EIT Urban Mobility. The programme, which has already seen success in Northern Europe, is designed to support the transition to low-emission transport in last-mile delivery services. With €400,000 in funding, it aims to assist couriers in adopting environmentally friendly vehicles, addressing the financial barriers often associated with electric transport.
The initiative is particularly timely for Prague, where alternative fuel vehicles still represent a small portion of the overall fleet. A recent demonstration event in the city showcased various low-emission delivery options, including electric bikes and vehicles, giving couriers and city officials a hands-on look at the future of urban logistics. The programme offers flexible leasing options for electric cargo bikes, with no upfront payment required. Couriers can choose from models tailored to different delivery needs, such as compact, lightweight bikes ideal for navigating dense city streets, or high-capacity cargo bikes suited for larger deliveries. These vehicles typically have a range of over 100 kilometres, swappable batteries, full-risk insurance, and regular maintenance.
The initiative underscores the value of expanding electric delivery fleets as a practical step towards improving air quality and reducing urban pollution. EIT Urban Mobility, through its Innovation Hub East, is actively involved in promoting such efforts across Central and Eastern Europe. By supporting cleaner transport solutions, the initiatives continues to play a key role in helping cities like Prague move towards a more sustainable future.
