Portugal launches accessible tourism certification to promote inclusive travel

Portugal is setting a new standard for inclusive travel by launching an accessible tourism certification. Aimed at improving mobility and inclusivity across tourist attractions, the initiative is designed to make cities and tourism services more accessible for all. The national certification, announced by Turismo de Portugal, has been introduced in compliance with the International Standard ISO 21902:2021.

Carlos Abade, President of Turismo de Portugal, stated: ‘Accessibility is a fundamental pillar of quality and sustainable tourism. With this certification, Turismo de Portugal takes another step towards making Portugal a truly inclusive destination, ensuring that everyone can enjoy our tourism offering with comfort and dignity.’ 

Although voluntary, the certification provides an incentive for tourist operators and agents to differentiate themselves positively in the market and contribute to Portugal's reputation as an inclusive and accessible tourist destination. To encourage participation, Turismo de Portugal will offer financial assistance to establishments seeking to make the necessary upgrades.

This initiative highlights the role of accessible tourism in shaping a more welcoming and sustainable travel industry. Not only does it elevate the travel experience for locals and visitors alike, it also provides a blueprint for other countries to prioritise inclusivity.
