Piraeus to develop Strategic Transport Plan

The Municipality of Piraeus have received the green light to develop it Strategic Transport Plan. The Region of Attica is funding the development of the plan, with EUR 800,000 being made available through the operational Programme Attica 2014-2020.

The Strategic Transport Plan aims to drive both the transition to sustainable mobility services and the reduction of air and noise pollution. These general objectives are the overarching framework to analyse the current state of play and derive fitting measures. The key areas to cover include:

• trips to and from the main points of activity within the city;
• passenger and pedestrian movements between the main public transport hubs such as metro, tram, bus, light rail as well as the city centre and the port;
• access and mobility in central areas by redefining public space use cases;
• active mobility as a corner stone for local mobility;
• a multimodal transport model for evaluating impacts of specific measures on key aspects of urban life.

The elaboration of the plan makes use of detailed analytical methods to forecast possible conflicts between measures, allowing the development of alternative solutions. It is based on existing and work-in-progress strategies such as the 'Regulatory Plan of Attica' and the 'Attica Urban Transport Authority’s Regional Plan'.
