Piedmont region revives rail connection with seamless mobile ticketing

The train operator Arenaways has re-opened the formerly suspended rail connection between Cuneo and Savigliano via Saluzzo, which had been closed since 2012. Ticketing for the reintroduced rail service makes use of a mobile pay-as-you-go app by the Swiss provider FAIRTIQ. The ticketing system operates without any additional hardware and was selected for its user-friendliness as it allows passengers to get the train ticket with a simple swipe on their phones.

Matteo Arena, general manager of Arenaways, said: “FAIRTIQ’s innovative pay-as-you-go mobile solution completely fulfils our ‘Rail different’ philosophy, which is based on full accessibility, comfort and a traveller-centric approach. The train is by far the most democratic transport system, and we firmly believe that it will play a key role in the mobility of the future.”

Arenaways receives support from the Piedmont region under a 10-year contract for the reopening of the line. The aim is to serve both residents and tourists in the region, making public transport more accessible and improving connectivity.
