Paris introduces a limited traffic zone in central areas

The city council of Paris has installed a limited traffic zone as of November 2024. This zone spans 5.5 square kilometres and includes the first four arrondissements of central Paris, home to approximately 100 000 residents. The zone prohibits through traffic, whilst allowing journeys starting and ending in the zone, such as medical appointments or shopping. Emergency vehicles, buses, taxis, individuals with reduced mobility, and residents are exempt and may still cross the area.

The primary aim of the limited traffic zone is to reduce air and noise pollution. Today, fine particulate matter concentrations are at double figures (10,5 μg/m3) compared to the World Health Organisation’s maxmimum concentration level (5 μg/m3). The zone will contribute to a decrease in traffic in the area, with estimates suggesting reductions of up to 30 % on certain roads.

Traffic signs at entry points announce the new limited traffic zone, and cameras have been installed to enforce the restrictions. After an initial grace period, unauthorised drivers may face fines of up to EUR 135. During this phase, police and civil service volunteers will be present to inform drivers about the changes. Full enforcement via cameras will require amendments to the city’s regulations.
