Osijek invests €35 million to modernise public transport

At the end of March 2022, the Croatian city of Osijek began its largest public transport upgrade for 14 years. The city will modernise its tram network to make it more accessible for all residents, as well as purchasing new buses.

The city's investments in its tram network include the renovation of 9.5 km of tram tracks, of 23 stations and of the network's energy supply installations, along with a new tram depot to bring public transport services in Osijek to levels in other European cities, according to Mayor Ivan Radić. Once the infrastructure works have been finished, Osijek will start operating new low-floor trams and new buses, which will complete the modernisation of public transport services in the city.

The project is financed with a mix of EU, national and local funds. Of the total €35 million, EU funds cover about €26 million, while national and local sources cover the remainder. While the renovation of the tram network is ongoing, the city will increase its bus services to replace the trams that are not able to operate in order to maintain public transport service levels for its residents and visitors.
