Optimising Mobility: A review of 5 mobile applications redefining the travel experience

The transport sector is becoming increasingly digitalised. From automated vehicles to digital payments on public transport and ride-hailing apps, it has transformed the way that we view and utilise transport systems. When applied successfully, technology offers a way to make mobility more accessible, seamless and effective, and it can also stimulate a modal shift to encourage more users of public transport.

The International Association of Public Transport recently highlighted five mobile applications that, according to them, have revolutionised the mobility experience.  

Île-de-france Mobilités - Paris, France

This application has become an invaluable companion to consumers and passengers navigating the urban landscape in Paris. The app connects the various transport systems in Paris, acting as a one-stop application that allows for seamless trip planning across transport modes. It also provides real-time updates on transportation options. Through the app, users are able to top-up their smart travel card ‘Navigo’, while also being able to directly purchase and load tickets onto their card.

DOT Billetter – Copenhagen, Denmark

This Danish application was born from the partnership of Denmark’s largest train operating company (DSB), their public transportation authority (Movia) and the Copenhagen Metro (Metroselskabet). The application provides real-time traffic insights and alerts passengers to any upcoming changes.

Delhi Metro – Delhi, India

This application leverages Whatsapp's existing platform to reimagine the way we book travel tickets. Whatsapp users are able to add the Delhi Metro phone number into their phones and send a text message to purchase a ticket. The user simply provides their start and end destination and the number of tickets, and can then pay securely. They will subsequently receive a QR ticket they can use at metro gates.

SMOU – Barcelona, Spain

SMOU allows users to access shared mobility services more easily. Through SMOU, users gain access to the 'Bicing' bike-share system, can handle parking payments, utilise B:SM parking services, recharge electric vehicles, and explore various sharing options. SMOU also offers extensive information regarding public parking and charging stations across the entire city.

HVV – Hamburg, Germany

This application takes a holistic approach to transport. Not only does it offer crucial customer information, allowing customers to save trips and set reminders, but it also sends alerts to users when there are service interruptions and other important announcements. It also features an in-built route planner across different transport networks such as the buses, trains, subways and even ferries.

 

Each of these innovative tools exemplifies the usefulness of technology in public transport. By enhancing the passenger experience, improving service accessibility and streamlining operations, they are catalysts for modal shift and move us closer to a future where public transport is the core of urban mobility.
