New video case study “Active Travel Policy – focus on the river banks of Paris”

The latest Eltis video case study documents the achievements and plans of the French capital in cycling promotion. Paris is, like many other urban areas, facing transport problems and sees the need to decarbonise traffic, reduce noise levels, improve conditions for public transport stuck in congestion, and to support public health. There is potential for a significant modal shift as half of the commutes completed by motorised modes can easily be done by cycling.

Recently, the Eltis team visited Paris’ Deputy Mayor Christophe Najdovski to learn about how cycling features in the city’s mobility development. The city adopted its bicycle plan in 2015 aiming for major changes by 2020 with investments of €150 Mio over the 5-year period. The plan aims for a modal share of 15% in 2020. The main features are to double the length of bicycle lanes to 1 400 km, install contra-flow cycling tracks in one-way streets across the city, 10 000 additional bicycle parking spaces, 80 km of cycling expressways, and an extension of the 30 km/h speed limit zones.

The video case study highlights the prominent project of turning the riverside expressway along the Seine into a 3,3 km walking and cycling track.
