A new 3.9 km tram extension has opened in Bratislava's Petržalka borough, marking a major upgrade to the city’s public transport network. Running on tram line 3, the extension provides a long-awaited modern connection between Petržalka’s largest residential area and the city centre.
Trams operate every 5 minutes on weekdays, with even more frequent service during the morning rush hour - as often as every 2.5 minutes. City officials expect the line to play a key role in shifting travel habits, helping to rebalance the share of public and private transport, especially for daily commuters.
As set out in Bratislava’s Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP), the city aims to achieve a 50:50 modal split between public and private transport. The new tram line is also expected to support local mobility and inter-district access, making Petržalka more attractive for cultural and recreational visits.
The project includes over 22,000 m² of green track cover, the planting of more than 1,500 trees, and 7,000 m² of shrubbery along the tram corridor. It also features a new 6km segregated cycle path linking Petržalka to the city centre, underlining Bratislava’s commitment to reducing emissions and traffic congestion.
The extension was co-financed by the European Union under the Programme Slovakia. Radim Dvořák, Deputy Head of the European Commission Representation in Slovakia, said: "The opening of the new tram line in Petržalka is excellent news for all those who travel daily for work, school or leisure. I am pleased that thanks to the financial support of the European Union, we can today jointly open a project that will improve the lives of tens of thousands of them."
