Since 1 July 2025, a new traffic sign known as the 'S-43' has started to appear on Spanish roads.
This square blue sign, showing a bicycle, an electric scooter and a pedestrian, marks urban routes shared by these three groups. It aims to improve safety by clearly defining the space for each type of user and reflects the growing focus on inclusive, sustainable transport.
Approved by the Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT), the S-43 is part of Spain’s new catalogue of road signs. It will be introduced gradually but is mandatory in all new signage projects that meet the required road conditions. The sign requires users to stay within their allocated lanes to reduce the risk of accidents.
Designed for urban areas where these modes of travel often interact, the sign helps create a safe and predictable environment. It supports local initiatives to promote active and sustainable mobility, while ensuring the safety and comfort of all users, especially pedestrians.
Failure to respect the rules linked to the S-43 sign can lead to a fine of up to €200. Although it does not result in the loss of driving licence points, it is considered a serious offence under Spanish traffic law. Fines may be issued to drivers who encroach on the reserved lanes, as well as to cyclists or scooter users who enter the pedestrian zone. Respecting the division of space is essential to preventing accidents and making shared roads work for everyone.
