New traffic monitoring system trial launches in Vilnius

A new traffic monitoring system that is smart city-ready has launched its first test spot in Lithuania’s capital city, Vilnius.

The monitoring system was developed by LMT, a mobile telecommunications operator based in Latvia. In collaboration with the Lithuanian system integrator Fima, the monitoring system is being tested until 15 August 2024 at selected intersections in Vilnius, providing the city with full access to traffic violation statistics.

The LMT transport monitoring system combines high-resolution cameras with machine vision and edge computing power/capabilities, and can perform complex processing without requiring significant infrastructure investments:

  • Edge computing technology involves the analysis happening on the device rather than sending the information to be processed from a central processing unit.
  • The mobile network connectivity function also reduces the installation requirement without requiring significant investments for municipalities to acquire smart city technologies.
  • The installation can be done in a matter of hours, only requiring a simple electrical connection to the system.
  • The system’s functions include object classification and identification, tracing object location and trajectory, number plates and traffic light signals identification.

During the test phase, the monitoring system is focussing on detecting red light running, illegal turns and bus lane monitoring. For bus lane monitoring, the system detects the vehicle types using the bus lanes and analyses number plates to determine whether a traffic violation is committed according to Lithuanian traffic rules. Such testing will be the first time testing the system’s whitelist and blacklist functionality at a large scale.

The developer claims the solution is fully GDPR-compliant, 4G compatible, and 5G ready, capable of installation in cities with mobile network coverage. The same transport monitoring system is also used in the city of Graz, Austria, as well as in other locations across Latvia.
