New public funds to improve cycling mobility in Turin

The Regional Government of Italian Piemonte region – led by President Mr Sergio Chiamparino - has given the green light to allocate €4.5 million to improve extra-urban cycle paths in the metropolitan area of Torino and beyond.  This is in addition to the €10 million previously made available in the 2017 regional budget, alongside other funding for projects on road safety.

Funding for road safety includes;

  • €250,000 for the drafting of a regional programme for cycle mobility;
  • €25,000 allocated to communication initiatives, and;
  • €29,000 to road safety education focused initiatives.

Another resolution authorised a further co-financing round of funds €890,000 to further improve cycling safety in municipalities with more than 20,000 inhabitants. The measures approved represent the 2018 Action Programme of the Regional Road Safety Plan.

Francesco Balocco, Councillor for Transport of the Piemonte region confirmed that the region is paying great attention to cycling, both in urban areas and for tourism purposes. This type of infrastructure is expected to bring concrete benefits in terms of its environmental and economic overall impact, as well as improve the health conditions of residents.
