Cities are increasingly using new mobility options, such as e-scooters and ride-hailing apps, which create both opportunities and challenges. The International Transport Forum's (ITF) report, Measuring New Mobility: Case Studies and Best Practices, offers guidance to policymakers on using data from these services to develop effective transport policies.
The report builds on earlier ITF work, which outlined how cities can classify and measure new mobility. This time, the focus is on real-world lessons from ten cities worldwide – what worked, what did not, and what others can learn from their experiences.
What cities can do
- Collect only what you need: Focus on gathering essential data to make informed decisions without overwhelming operators or city systems.
- Team up across government levels: Whether local, regional, or national, everyone benefits when data collection efforts work together seamlessly.
- Invest in skills and tools: From training staff to building better IT systems, public authorities need to gear up for handling mobility data confidently.

Want to learn more? The ITF is hosting an “Ask the Author” webinar on 21 January 2025. It is an opportunity to hear directly from the people behind the report and ask your questions about applying these insights in your city.
