Madrid Metro begins parcel deliveries to reduce traffic and pollution

The regional government of Madrid has launched a three-month pilot project in collaboration with GLS Spain, using the city's metro system for parcel deliveries. The initiative aims to reduce street traffic, congestion, and pollution by utilising Line 12 in the southern part of the city. A dedicated train will transport approximately 700 packages daily between 19:00 and 20:00, stopping at four stations for rapid loading and unloading.

In the second phase of the project, the model will extend to Line 3, partnering with a different courier company to deliver 400 packages a day to Embajadores station. From there, eco-friendly transport methods, such as bicycles and handcarts, will be used to distribute parcels within the city centre.

This initiative is part of a broader effort to position the Madrid region as a logistics hub in southern Europe. Plans include the creation of a new logistics agency to further develop sustainable distribution methods.
