Madrid and Buenos Aires municipalities jointly promote urban regeneration and mobility

In 2018, the municipalities of Madrid and Buenos Aires have signed a commitment to promote sustainable urban regeneration, within the framework of the European Union's International Urban Cooperation Programme (IUC-LAC) initiative for Latin America and the Caribbean. This EU Programme aims to support cities in different parts of the world to connect and share solutions to common problems in their sustainable urban development, within the framework of the New Urban Agenda and the fight against climate change.

According to Program Manager Sandra Marín, the IUC initiative seeks to promote a new global urban agenda in Latin America and the Caribbean, facilitating the partnership of European cities with Latin American cities in order to jointly address the urban challenges of the future.

After the visit of the delegation from the city of Madrid to Buenos Aires, where the joint project was launched, the Spanish capital has received delegates from its Latin American counterpart to show the development of the regeneration project that is currently being undertaken in the Gran Via. On this occasion, the Buenos Aires delegation had the chance to learn about the solutions implemented in the renovation of the Gran Vía and its subsequent areas, to enrich the Argentinean project of Corrientes Cultural.

Further challenges and topics being explored concern the balance of different transport modes, the improvement of public spaces, heritage protection, air and noise pollution. Both cities are seeking to develop a good practice manual on the renovation of central urban axes from integral approaches to sustainability, with the cases of Gran Vía and Corrientes Avenue.
