The world has seen a growing trend in the use of cargo bikes for plenty of different purposes, one of these being for deliveries around cities. During the COVID-19 pandemic, online purchases of relatively small products, such as food, clothing, electronics and home accessories, have risen steeply and cyclelogistics hubs are well-equipped to support the delivery of these types of orders.
“A Guide to Planning Cyclelogistics Hubs” was recently launched by The CityChangerCargoBike (CCCB), a CIVITAS project supported by the EU's Horizon 2020 programme. CCCB considers cargo bikes to be a climate-friendly, space-saving and health-increasing mobility and transport option for private and commercial users with the power to transform cities and increase the quality of urban life.
This guide aims to inspire a move towards cyclelogistics cargo bike hubs by providing readers with detailed insights for their development. It defines what a cyclelogistics hub is and how they can be used as part of the structure of a delivery service. Readers are provided with a full picture of the ideal cyclelogistics hub, and the elements that must be addressed in order to achieve this.
This includes,
- the characteristics, key determining factors, advantages and disadvantages of the different types of cyclelogistics hubs;
- the 10 planning stages that set out an approach to the development of hubs that consider all actors and allow for many possible scenarios; and
- the description of supporting components that affect the final outcome of the hub. This includes the infrastructure within the hub’s catchment area and the relevant support measures, e.g. by means of monetary subsidies, traffic restrictions and emissions regulations.
The guide can be download from here.
