Highlights from the Berlin Conference on SUMP development and implementation

The National Competence Network for Sustainable Mobility (NaKoMo) serves as a central hub for addressing sustainable mobility issues across local, state and federal levels in Germany. Acting on behalf of the German government, NaKoMo facilitates nationwide interdisciplinary exchange on all aspects of sustainable mobility. By doing so, it provides a platform for sharing knowledge on measures and projects aimed at developing and implementing efficient, affordable, sustainable and accessible mobility solutions.

NaKoMo hosts a wide range of events including workshops, talks, seminars and networking opportunities. Recently, their 6^th Annual Conference titled “For liveable and efficient cities and regions”, took place on 19 and 20 June 2024 in Berlin, Germany. The Conference focused on sustainable urban mobility planning, particularly the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP) guidelines developed by the European Commission. 

Experts and stakeholders gathered to delve into these topic through presentations, panel discussions and interactive sessions. Throughout the two-day event, participants engaged in stimulating discussions on the requirements and development steps of SUMPs. 

Other key topics included: enhancing quality of life through sustainable mobility; creating more people-oriented spaces and functional urban areas; promoting public participation and public relations; leveraging data and indicators for monitoring and evaluation; forecasting future mobility needs; and fostering institutional cooperation for SUMP implementation. 

The Federal Minister for Digital and Transport, Dr. Volker Wissing, delivered the keynote address. He emphasised that effective urban mobility planning “requires tailor-made solutions and cooperation between all modes of transport and means of transport”. He also highlighted that “it is important to involve the public in this process”.
