The Portuguese city of Guimarães has increased its funding for public transport tickets to foster public transport use and the mobility of students and people with reduced mobility. Its Public Transport Tariff Reduction Support Program (PART) increases the municipal contribution to pupils tickets from 50% to 100% and enlarges the geographic scope of PART’s validity. Support for pupils is delivered regardless of if they visit Guimarães private or public schools, at basic or secondary education.
Students living in Guimarães and attending higher education institutions in the city get a 100% financed social pass of the Intermunicipal Community of Ave (CIM Ave), too. The programme also includes discounts for all people with a disability degree of 60% or higher for services of Transurbanos de Guimarães, the city public transport provider.
All in all, the city invests more than EUR 500,000 to support public transport users.
Guimarães Council as well agreed with public transport providers active in the city on these new rules and included to keep essential services even during drawbacks to public transport during the COVID-19 pandemic.
